Researchers Say Eating Chocolate Every Day Can Have Serious Health Benefits
Wait, what? You had us at dark chocolate, but we'll take the good news! See this article for more information. Meanwhile, we're so glad that we carry AlterEco Chocolates from up north in San Francisco! Not only are the products made from fine quality, fair trade, dark chocolate, they're also made with coconut oil, not palm. That's important to us, since the use of palm oil seriously impacts the world's rainforests and robs habitat from many creatures that live there, specifically orangutans. Make a conscious choice this Easter - AlterEco, always no soy, no GMOs, no emulsifiers, no artificial flavors, and gluten free!

New Years Cleanse? Try Tea, Instead!
Although this title could mean many things, such as cleaning up the store after a busy holiday season, it's meant as a reference to internal body cleansing. We get asked a lot if we carry any "cleansing" products - i.e., teas or other tisanes that might help a person's body purge any "toxins".
It's a great thought, isn't it, that you can spend the holidays eating and drinking whatever you want, and wait until the new year for a "cleanse". I sure wish that were true, and many other people do, too, it seems. Unfortunately, the use of the words "cleanse" and "toxins" are marketing-speak to promote products that claim to rid your body of unwanted, and possibly dangerous, compounds that you (might have) ingested. Your body's liver and kidneys already rid your body of anything toxic. A "cleanse" isn't really needed if your organs are already doing their job. You may unintentionally create an environment in your body that fosters bacteria if you do. There have been many studies done recently that point to this same conclusion. One of the best overviews I've read is here, and this is why we don't choose to sell cleanses here at Hoopla! Emporium.
We do, however, sell tea. Tea, whether they be true teas (Camellia sinensis), or herbal, all have beneficial ingredients that can, and do, help you stay healthy. Black, white, or green teas all contain varying amounts of caffeine, but also contain polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) and phytochemicals, which are beneficial. Find out what different teas can help with here.
At Hoopla! Emporium, we carry Rishi Tea, a high-quality, fair trade line with many organic choices. We also carry World Flavorz, and Tea Drops, both local companies. The following is a short list of the different, healthy, choices we have on our shelves:
Mint Teas: From Rishi Tea comes Green Mint Tea, Peppermint Rooibos, and Pacific Peppermint. Peppermint is a fragrant herb that makes for a soothing drink. Peppermint helps you digest foods better and also reduces flatulence and digestive issues. Peppermint is prescribed to people with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and gallstones in capsules. A cup of peppermint tea will ease nausea and vomiting, especially if you suffer motion sickness. If you have heartburn, don’t drink peppermint tea as this might aggravate your condition. Peppermint tea brings down the severity of herpes outbreaks. The natural mint flavor of the herb helps to freshen your breath. Other health benefits of this tea are control of muscle aches and chronic pain, clearing of congestion and mild coughs, mild asthma and reduction of stress.
Fruit Teas: Also from Rishi Tea, Blueberry Hibiscus, Blueberry Rooibos, and Cinnamon Plum are tasty choices for a healthy sip. Hibiscus tea is known to lower blood pressure, reduce high cholesterol and strengthen the immune system (it’s rich in Vitamin C). Hibiscus flower infusions have known to reduce hypertension as well, in people prone to this condition. A recent study reveals that hibiscus tea is rich in antioxidants, which protect the body against cell-damaging free radicals. Blueberries, as well as certain stone fruits, are rich in antioxidants as well.
Green Teas: We carry choices of green tea from Rishi Tea, and from Tea Drops. Green Tea comes with such a host of health benefits, that it’s called the ‘wonder herb’ by tea drinkers and medical practitioners alike.
Drinking green tea lowers cancer risk and also inhibits carcinogenic in cigarettes and other compounds when imbibed. Green Tea contains potent antioxidants called polyphenols, which help suppress free radicals. Green tea also stops certain tumors from forming. Green tea lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels and thereby promotes heart health. Green tea also lowers blood pressure, prevents and fights tooth decay and dental issues, and inhibits different viruses from causing illnesses. We suggest trying Rishi Tea's Matcha Green, now in teabags!
Spice Teas: From all three of our vendors, spice teas are very popular during the holiday season. Black tea (or green, or Rooibos) teas are mixed with certain spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, clove, and newcomers like turmeric and ginger. These teas are festive and soothing, and we've all heard the buzz about the four spices mentioned. Turmeric has been found to be an anti-inflammatory; cinnamon and cardamom are high in antioxidants; and ginger has a myriad of benefits, from soothing an upset stomach to fighting morning and altitude sickness. We also have Rishi Tea's Serene Dream, which contains Valerian root, lemon balm, lavender and chamomile, and can help with insomnia.
Black Teas: Despite the fact that black tea has caffeine, drinking it hydrates your body. We have many different choices here at Hoopla! Emporium, including Rishi Tea's wonderful chai teas. Tea Drops' Rose Earl Grey is fragrant and delicious!
White Teas: More delicate in flavor than a black tea, white tea still offers quite a healthful punch. We suggest trying Tea Drops' Vanilla White for a lovely cuppa.
We're expanding our selection of fine teas, so you'll see more here in the store soon. Please drop by, email, or visit us on our Facebook page if you have any questions at all regarding tea, and certainly come by if you need any tea accutrements - we carry loose leaf tea bags, strainers, and tea pots! We don't claim to be health professionals, but we do know our stuff when it comes to what we carry in the store. Ask us, and we'll tell you all about it!

Perception
Hello, friends, another Monday has come and so it's time for a blog post. Last week we discussed Sally Hogshead's new book, How The World Sees You. In it, we posted a link and a password to take the perception test at no charge. Did you try it? We'd love to know what you thought - leave us a message and let us know your two defining traits and your archetype! To have a little fun with this, here's what your archetype would be if they were named after super heroes:
Speaking of perception, we'd like to share someone else's blog post with you today, with a hat tip to our good friend Rose Eliff, who brought it to our attention. The blog is called Momastary and the post, here, is called "Give Me Gratitude Or Give Me Debt". It's a very uplifting post, and we hope you enjoy it!
Why would a retail store want you to read a post about someone who is consciously avoiding keeping up with the Joneses? Isn't that what retail's all about, trying to get everyone in your store to buy the latest geegaw and gadget? Most of them do, yes indeed they do. We're a little different here at Hoopla. We are An Emporium Of Good Things, and as such, carry products that are mostly sourced locally. We have the largest collection of books written by people that live in and around Altadena. We carry products like soap, tea, sauces, and caramels all made by local or regional folks. Real people with real names, that you may bump into while shopping. Greeting cards, art, music, wall decor, even pens made locally. We carry fair trade gift wrap, bags, shoppers, scarves, jewelry, and journals. Of the imports that we do carry, we carefully vet the companies to ensure that manufacturing laws and workers are not being abused. No children were harmed in the production of our merchandise. It's always a nice bonus when we find these type of companies locally, as well. You see, we're a feel-good store, and we figure you can never get enough of a good thing, right? You'll come in, there's no need for us to shout about how much better we are than your other choices, but cheering sections are always welcomed!
So what does this have to do with perception? It says we care - deeply and truly care about what you bring into your home. We know you could buy products anywhere, so we specialize in finding products that not everyone has. We know you could patronize any business, and we're very thankful you choose ours. This is why we're so choosy - because you are!
With that said, we've got some great new garden items coming in from Regal Art And Gifts, a California company located in Concord. There will be some great solar yard stakes and wind chimes that are just perfect for your late summer garden! We can't wait until the fall yard decorations come in because they're so cool! Here's a little peek of what's coming:
Remember, we also have beautiful Leoj Wishing Balls. These are extremely well made (in the U.S.!) glass objects that soak up the sun's rays during the day, and glow softly at night. Almost as wonderful as fireflies, these shapes will fascinate you!

Put A Little Love In Your Heart ( And Community)
"
Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see it's getting late
Oh, please don't hesitate
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Another day goes by
Still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart
If you want the world to know
We won't let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart
And the world (and the world) will be a better place
All the world (all the world) will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And see, wait and see
Take a good look around
And if you're looking down
Put a little love in your heart
I hope when you decide
Kindness will be your guide
Put a little love in your heart
And the world (and the world) will be a better place
And the world (and the world) will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And see

This past week saw an extreme change in our weather pattern. We went from the coldest I've ever felt it here in Southern California back to warm and sunny just a couple days ago - but I'll tell you that was one long, cold spell we had! It proved to me that we are so not acclimated to chilly temperatures, and Scott and I were overjoyed when the mercury topped 75 degrees in beautiful Altadena!
Just as our weather can change dramatically, so can our shopping habits. In a post on our Facebook page this week, I posted an article from Retail's Big Blog that recounted former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's recent speech at the Big Show in New York. The gist of his speech was that retail just may end up being a core driver of employment in the future, if the global community begins to plan ahead for sustainability and focus on what he terms "the three pillars" of stable governments - peace and stability, development, and rule of law and respect for human rights. In short, and in my opinion, this equates to everyone adopting fair trade practices.
If we truly care about being responsible global citizens, and having a world economy that thrives, we must learn to cooperate. Cooperation and fair trade practices start at the grass-roots level, in our own dealings in our communities. Four years ago, I wrote a blog post called "The Meaning Of Think Global, Buy Local", in which I explained what happens when you shift your shopping. We're still at it, doing what we can to be good global and community citizens. Over the years, we've concentrated more on buying from hyper-local companies and community artists. We love doing this, and we love being able to donate to community non-profits!
Our latest came yesterday, when Scott and I handed a check to the Christmas Tree Lane Association in the amount of $512.00! See the Altadenablog article about it here. We are so pleased that their merchandise sold so well this year, and want to thank our customers for buying so enthusiastically! Keep it up, friends, you're contributing to a great cause!
We'll talk again next week - until then, have a great week!

And Now For Something Completely Different......
'We're hoping to succeed; we're okay with failure. We just don't want to land in between.'
--David Chang
"He's serious. Lots of people say this, but few are willing to put themselves at risk, which destroys the likelihood of success and dramatically increases the chance of in between." ---- Seth Godin
I don't think anyone could say that we're "inbetween", unless they were speaking about our physical location. Sandwiched inbetween two other stores, WFS has no windows to the outside world. Inside, though, we're a world apart from other shops.
Did you realize that we represent over 50 local artists? We have local representation in all genres - card makers, authors of books, fine art and prints, gourmet food products, body products and jewelry! WFS takes pride in the fact that we invest in our community, because that's what helps make us strong.
We also believe in buying fair trade, or buying merchandise that "gives back". That means the company we buy from donates to a good cause, like LiveStrong or Women At Work. We love this so much, we actually hunt down those companies whose products fit our business model! We've been lucky to find so many recently and it's a great feeling to know that our customers appreciate this about us. Thanks so much for letting us know how important giving back to the community and the world is to you, it helps us shape our future plans.
Some people worry that a business model like ours is risky. Is it? Yes, it is - to be different is always risky. Is it worth the sacrifice? Resoundingly, yes! If we happen to do any good at all, it's worth it. To help call attention to our local artistic community, it's worth it. To help change what we as average shoppers care about and look for in products is worth it. What....did you think we were in this for the money?
If your plan is to tailor your shopping habits to fit your socially conscious sensibilities, we're your store! Come in soon to see what goodies we've gotten in for Valentines Day - our local artists and WFS appreciate you!
Have a great week ahead, my friends!

Opportunity Knocking
As many of you know, I'm a big fan of Seth Godin. His marketing advice is spot-on, but I enjoy him for so much more, especially his pithy takes on what's happening in the world today and how it relates to having an impact. He's written two such blog posts recently, here and here, that exemplify this, and I highly recommend your reading them before we continue.
In the body of the second blog post, Seth says "the opportunity (to make a difference), though, is the biggest of our generation (or the last one, for that matter). The opportunity is there for anyone (with our without a job) smart enough to take it - to develop a best in class skill, to tell a story, to spread the word, to be in demand, to satisfy 'real needs', to run from the mediocre middle and to change everything". He also says "the old economy offered a guarantee - time plus education plus obedience equals stability. The new one, not so much. The new one offers a chance for you to take a chance and make an impact".
This, my friends, is essentially what we're doing at WFS. Running from the mediocre, not relying on the way things were done "before", we are mapping out a new territory in retail land - one that espouses cooperation over competition. One that demands we take a stand for the things we believe in, such as buying locally to reduce our carbon footprint. One that demands we buy U.S. made products to invest in our own economy and one that demands we buy ethically produced products if they're made overseas. Most of all it demands the utmost integrity; our name denotes longevity but it will now be synonymous with fairness and a willingness to go the extra mile to ensure you a comfortable shopping experience. Trust is not given easily, that we know. Time will prove our mettle, and we ask that you give us a chance.....a chance to show you exactly how we can make an impact on our corner of the world, and maybe change everything.
Thanks for listening and we hope you have a lovely week ahead! Remember, Mother's Day will be quickly upon us and WFS can help you with that. We have American-made cards that are perfect for giving moms of all sorts and we have some wonderful items for gifting - come on in and let us show you!

It's What's Inside That Counts
"Truckin' like the doodah man
Once told me "Gotta play your hand
Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime
If you don't lay them down"
Sometimes the lights all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been"
----The Grateful Dead
With the lyrics from this song reverberating around my head, I can't help but relate it to our life these past two years. Creating Webster's Fine Stationers from an erstwhile pass-through department has been a long, strange trip, indeed. Fraught with obstacles and setbacks, it's not a stretch of the truth to say that we've been tempted to call it quits several times. But just when things seem bleakest, Scott and I remember why we're doing this - why the challenge of creating a thriving shop against all odds is important to us. It's because we believe in Webster's, we believe in Webster's Fine Stationers and we believe in Altadena.
As we come up on our two year anniversary, we can look back and see all the tangible things we've done to improve WFS. The layout, the decor, the merchandise have all changed for the better but one thing has remained a constant that's not tangible - our dedication to providing Altadena with a shopping venue that's hip and on the cutting edge of cool! There is no other place in the area that offers as much sustainable merchandise as we do. No one offers the amount of products made right here in the U.S. as we do, and no one offers the ambiance and the customer care that we do. We prefer to deal with local vendors and artists and when we can't find what we want inside the U.S., we are trending toward companies who offer fair trade practices in those countries where they have their merchandise made.

We love to deal with those companies who donate to charities. Open Hand is one such company and we're expecting their first shipment any day now. Open Hand is based in Atlanta, Georgia, but their products are made all over the world using fair trade practices. Their employees are paid well and they make sure that they and their families are covered by adequate medical insurance. If that weren't enough, they donate 10% of their proceeds before taxes to charities here and abroad that fight human trafficking. Praols, another new company for us, makes their beautiful jewelry right here in the U.S. and employs financially distressed, stay at home moms and women who are heads of their households. Two new card lines for us, Wiley Valentine and Uncooked, Inc., are U.S. made - Wiley Valentine is made right here in Orange County, CA. As always, we feature handmade jewelry by local Altadena artisans, Jewels of the Earth by Diana, Ruthie Castro and Julie Lyn Pircher. We carry handmade cards by local artists Donna Barnes-Roberts and Athena Meltzer, and are searching for more local artists.
Companies that use recycled materials is important, too, and many of our vendors do. Most importantly, however, is their use of post-consumer waste materials and two of our major vendors do just that. Amber Lotus, maker of fine cards and calendars (in store now) and The Green Paper Company are both producers of products that contain from 30% to 100% post-consumer waste. We believe that this is important and we hope that you, do, too.

It's been said by several of our Very Important Customers that it would be wonderful if we had windows like the adjoining stores do. I wish we did, too, because what a statement we could make with them! However, price precludes that option at this time. We'd rather spend what little money we do have on products like I've mentioned above, and we do have to pay rent. Until we can address the situation, Scott came up with our new tag line, which is the title of this blogpost. My husband is a genius, because that little tag line says it all and more! It's IS what inside that counts....not only the merchandise but inside the hearts of everyone who works at Webster's Fine Stationers. Come in today and experience it for yourself! Follow us on Twitter (@lorinscott), become a fan of our store on Facebook and see our pictures on FlickR!

Different & Special? California Gift Show Report, Summer 2009
WSL: Women ready to spend on home – if goods are ‘different’
-- Home Textiles Today, 7/23/2009 10:55:00 AM
New York – WSL Strategic Retail’s recent consumer survey found women are itching to spend again, if carefully. The top four items on their list: apparel, vacation, a night out and decorative home items.
But they’re not seeing the kind of merchandise that would stimulate a purchase, according to the consultancy.
WSL’s “How America Shops/Pulse of Shopping Life” found 48% of women surveyed could afford to shop but want to spend on items that are “different and special.” Among girls age 13 to 17, 50% would be willing to cut back on small purchase for something more expensive “if they really wanted it.”
One-in-four women said they were tired of penny-pinching and “ready to splurge,” according to the survey.

That’s the article I received from a retail-specific publication in my email today. Great news and something that I think Webster’s Fine Stationers can definitely offer our customers! Our fabulous WFS buyers, Lori and Michelle, handpick everything here. We also have the input of our crew, who hears what you’re saying about what you’d like to see in our store. All our merchandise is special and isn’t something you’d find elsewhere. From our hand-made Altadena signs and cards to original oil paintings and picture frames, we’re stocking the decorative items you want at prices that aren’t out of this world. Even our office supplies are different. Many companies we feature are made here in the U.S. and you don't have to buy a pack of 50 file folders, envelopes, Post-It Notes or sheet protectors. Pens, pencils, binder clips and report covers are also available individually.
The Summer 2009 California Gift Show just ended Monday and I thought it was the best show we’ve been to. Granted, attendance was down due to the economy but those who were there were upbeat and looking forward to happier times ahead. The mood was lighthearted and we were happy to spend time in those showrooms that had the best and brightest to offer. It was nice to have time to make critical decisions and not be distracted by hundreds of buyers clamoring for attention.
I was personally very enamored by a newish company called Open Hand, out of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Although their merchandise is made outside the U.S., they are a fair-trade company and provide all their artisans with safe, clean working conditions, fair wages and medical insurance for their families. Their products – scarves, wraps, jewelry and bags – are made out of post-consumer waste material and are uniquely beautiful. I love their messenger bags made out of recycled billboards and rubber tires! What’s great about this company is that they donate 10% of their profits across the board, before taxes, to organizations committed to helping people who have been subjected to the injustices of human trafficking here in the U.S. They’ve partnered with Wellspring, an Atlanta-based non-profit that helps women and girls who’ve been victimized by the effects of alcohol and drug addiction, depression, and working in the adult entertainment industry. Human trafficking takes many forms and is a complex problem. As long as there is a demand for products and services, and there are people living in poverty who are easily taken advantage of, trafficking will continue. We’re proud to be helping in any small way we can…look for Open Hand to arrive in store shortly.
Just in is inspirational jewelry and décor from Praols, a California company who manufactures their merchandise in Chula Vista. They create unique handcrafted jewelry and believe that everything in life carries a message. Therefore, their bracelets and necklaces aren’t just jewelry, but a fun way to pass the message on. Stay-at-home moms and low-income single mothers that find themselves in dire circumstances make the line. Working for the flexible company, these women are able to earn an income without the burden of day-care expenses. This great company’s merchandise arrived this morning and we couldn’t be happier to introduce it to you!
